I am doing a sync backup of email server files to another server on our network. The email machine and target server specs are more than adequate, and are on a Gigabit network. The main problem is that there are a very large number of small files(500,000+), for a total of about 75 gigs.
A straight copy between the machines takes about 4 hours. A sync backup without compression is taking between 14 and 16 hours. During the backup, processor usage is minimal on both machines, a decent amount of free ram is available, and network utilization averages about 0.25%.
Are there any suggestions for increasing performance? Bumping the process priority doesn't seem to make any difference.
